Trying to Get Pregnant – TCM & Naturopathic Style
Trying to conceive can be a beautiful yet sometimes overwhelming journey. If I were preparing for pregnancy, I’d view my body like a garden – preparing the soil, nourishing the roots, and creating the right conditions for new life to flourish. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and naturopathic wisdom both work holistically, supporting not just the reproductive system but the whole body. Here’s how I would approach it:
1. Balance Yin and Yang
Fertility thrives when yin (cooling, nourishing energy) and yang (warming, activating energy) are in harmony.
-
Nourish yin with hydrating foods like soups, stews, berries, and seeds.
-
Support yang by avoiding cold foods and drinks, and keeping the womb warm.
-
Keep your lower back and abdomen protected from cold and drafts.
💡 TCM Tip: Sip warming ginger tea after meals to gently boost yang energy.
2. Support Kidney Energy
The Kidneys are seen as the “root of life” in TCM, storing vital essence (Jing) needed for reproduction.
-
Eat kidney-supportive foods like walnuts, black beans, and bone broth.
-
Choose gentle exercise such as yoga, walking, or qi gong.
-
Prioritise deep, restorative sleep.
💡 TCM Tip: Protect your neck and lower back from drafts – a scarf and tucked-in shirt can go a long way.
3. Keep Stress Low and Qi Flowing
Stress blocks Qi and disrupts energy flow to the womb.
-
Try acupuncture or acupressure on calming points (your therapist can advise).
-
Use breathing exercises, meditation, or journaling.
-
Spend time outdoors to rebalance your nervous system.
💡 TCM Tip: Press gently between the eyebrows (Yin Tang point) for 1–2 minutes when anxious.
4. Nourish Blood
Healthy blood regulates cycles and supports a potential pregnancy.
-
Eat leafy greens, beetroot, dates, goji berries, and grass-fed meat.
-
Cut back on caffeine and alcohol.
-
Track your cycle to observe changes in flow, colour, and energy.
💡 TCM Tip: Add a handful of goji berries to porridge or tea for a daily blood tonic.
5. Keep the Body Warm & Protected
Warmth supports circulation and Kidney Yang, while cold drains fertility energy.
-
Keep your midriff cosy: use layers, a vest, or hot water bottle. Avoid sitting on cold surfaces.
-
Skip iced drinks – choose herbal teas, soups, or room-temp water.
-
Avoid cold plunges or barefoot walking on cold floors.
-
Reduce toxins in your home: replace synthetic air fresheners and candles with natural alternatives.
💡 TCM Tip: A warm hot water bottle on your belly in the evening boosts circulation and comfort.
6. Use Food as Medicine
Naturopathy reminds us that diet is key to energy and hormonal balance.
-
Choose whole, seasonal foods rich in protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs.
-
Balance blood sugar with regular meals.
-
Try seed cycling to support hormonal shifts naturally. (Ask me about my Seed Cycling ebook!)
💡 TCM Tip: Think “warm and cooked” – soups, stews, porridge, and roasted veg are more supportive than raw salads when TTC.
7. Create a Fertile Lifestyle
Lifestyle shapes the environment your body provides.
-
Keep the womb warm with extra layers or a hot water bottle.
-
Use natural skincare and cleaning products; avoid plastics for food storage.
-
Move your body gently – yoga, swimming, or walking are perfect.
-
Nurture connection and joy with your partner.
💡 TCM Tip: Put on music and sway or dance for a few minutes each day to lift mood and move Qi.
8. Seek Support
You don’t have to walk this path alone. The right support can help regulate cycles, calm the mind, and prepare your body for conception.
✨ Acupuncture and reflexology are powerful tools for balancing hormones, improving circulation, and easing stress. What makes them so special is that each treatment is tailored – adjusting to your cycle, your energy, and your unique needs.
🌿 At Olive Tree, I offer personalised fertility support through acupuncture and reflexology. Together, we’ll create a plan that nurtures your whole body, with aftercare advice to guide you between sessions.
💡 TCM Tip: Even one acupuncture session per cycle can encourage harmony and gently support fertility.
If you’re ready to give yourself the best chance of conceiving, I’d love to welcome you into my clinic.
In Short…
When it comes to preparing your body for pregnancy, the little daily things really add up. Eat warm, nourishing foods. Keep your body cosy and protected from the cold (yes – that means wearing socks!). Prioritise rest and deep sleep. Move gently, reduce stress, and give yourself time to recharge. Throw out those artificial air fresheners and get back to being in nature. With these small but powerful habits, you’re creating the most supportive environment for new life to begin.
🌿 And if you’d like an extra helping hand, acupuncture and reflexology can make a wonderful addition – gently guiding your body back into balance and supporting you on your journey.
